Unhappy Camper is an ALA Children's Best Graphic Novel 2024 and other happenings

Hi,

I got the fantastic news from my lovely editor that my middle grade graphic novel Unhappy Camper is an ALA Children's Best Graphic Novel 2024 selection. I am so honored!! Also, since I don't read reviews because that's the best way to stay focused on drafting my new book, I couldn't tell if anyone was connecting to Unhappy Camper. I'm so glad to find that readers are connecting with it!!

In other news, I had such an amazing time teaching a three-day writer-in-residence for the Crofton House's Lower School in Vancouver, British Columbia. The teachers and faculty created such a nurturing place for their students. It was such a pleasure to work with their students. They were curious and engaged. Here's the blog post from Crofton House if you'd like to read about my writer-in-residence at Crofton House.

This Saturday, I'll be one of the Literary Lion authors at the King County Library System Foundation gala at the Bellevue Regional Library in Bellevue, WA. Our keynote is Susan Orleans, author and staff writer for the New Yorker in conversation with Jay Martin, Jr, national PBS host. The KCLS Foundation provides funding for much of the programming extras for the library system such as the summer reading and free lunch program. Kids who normally get free lunches during the school year can come out in the summer for books and free lunches. The foundation also supports the Otter and Sasquatch reading programs in schools. There are many more important programs that are supported. You can learn about them at the gala. Tickets are still available here.

Also, on April 11th, I will be at the Washington Library Association's Book Bash in Tacoma, WA with many other authors. If you're attending, please stop by to say hello! Check out the other events at the conference here.

Spring is just around the corner! My weeds are popping up! Enjoy the coming change in weather.

Hi, Friend, Happy Almost Lunar New Year and Spring Festival! The dragon will leave to make room for the snake on January 29, 2025. The snake is associated with wisdom and resilience which is certainly excellent traits we could all use. I know I can! I’m looking forward to spending time with family for Lunar New Year. No hot pot this year since scheduling doesn’t allow but we’ll still get together for a lovely meal at a restaurant. And, I’ll spend time this week to, as I say in Chloe’s Lunar...

Poulsbo Kids' Book Festival Hi, The fabulous Liberty Bay Books in Poulsbo, WA is doing their first kids book festival this Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm at the Sons of Norway Hall. The festival is a dream of its owner and kid lit author Suzanne Selfors. I love both being an author and an attendee of kids book festivals. It is so much fun to see and talk to so many kid lit authors all in one place. There is so much great energy! Check out the authors who will be there....

Chloe’s Lunar New Year named Bank Street Best Children’s Books 2024 Hi, Reader, I learned this morning that my picture book CHLOE’S LUNAR NEW YEAR has been named as Bank Street Best Children’s Books in the Holiday and Religion category. I am so excited and honored that the Bank Street committee chose Chloe’s story about celebrating Reunion Dinner with family and that even when a loved one is no longer with us, they will always be with us as long as we remember and hold them close to our...
